West Bridgford RFC U13 Girls Rugby Team had their first EVER rugby match at the weekend against Melbourne RFC and Mansfield RFC.
After their first month of contact rugby training, the U13 girls from West Bridgford RFC were invited to their first ever fixture against Melbourne Minxs and Mansfield RFC.
They have been playing tag rugby over the last six months but jumped at the chance of having a go at contact rugby. Caroline Towndrow, the girls coach from WBRFC, contacted Nick Woodland, the Minxs Head Coach, who offered a coaching session and matches against Melbourne RFC.
As the games progressed from touch to hug to contact rugby, so did the girls’ confidence grow during the games.
“I couldn't believe the progress the girls made over their 3 matches. Their tenacity and determination grew as well as their team spirit. But best of all, they loved it and are all looking forward to their first home fixture on 27th November when they will be hosting Melbourne in a return match. Thanks to Nick Woodland for his support as it has made their transition to contact rugby so much more enjoyable,” said Caroline.
This is quite a big step forward for the club and we hope its success encourages more girls to get involved in rugby and have a go.
Also many thanks to Chris Allen and Wilson Ross for helping Caroline out.
The U13s and U11s train on Sunday lunch times, from 12.30pm to 1.45pm at the Memorial Ground on Stamford Road in West Bridgford. If anyone is interested in having a go, please contact Caroline Towndrow on 07876 785748 or email: ctowndrow-wbrfc@hotmail.com. Or check the website for future fixtures.
